The North Rothbury resident was overwhelmed with the news that she had been named as Cessnock's Local Woman of the Year for 2022.
Ms Scott was recognised for her tireless volunteering efforts for many organisations over the past 40 years.
She has helped raise thousands of dollars for local schools, sporting clubs, churches and local and national charities, including the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, the Cancer Council, the Black Dog Institute, Jodie's Place and Friends of Palliative Care.
Ms Scott began volunteering in 1980 as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, before she went on to volunteer at the Cardiff Public School canteen and Cardiff Junior Soccer. She has also volunteered for Branxton Lions Club, Women's Apex Club, and the Anglican Op Shop and the Central Hunter Business Chamber.
As caretaker of Branxton Community Hall, she has organised markets and morning teas for charity, looks after bookings and maintenance, and has lobbied for improvements including a new kitchen and solar panels.
The hall was originally built at the Greta Army Camp (which later became Greta Migrant Camp), and as a first-generation Australian child of Polish parents who lived at the migrant camp, Ms Scott is passionate about its history and significance to the community.
"Now that I'm looking after the hall, it's like it's come full circle," she said.
"The hall is my passion."
The Local Woman of the Year is chosen by the state MP in each electorate in NSW, and the winners will be acknowledged at the NSW Women of the Year awards on Wednesday.
Cessnock MP Clayton Barr said Ms Scott's contribution to the community is immeasurable.
"Helen embodies community spirit and a willingness to help out others," Mr Barr said.
"It is a privilege to be able to acknowledge Helen's hard work and thank her for her efforts on behalf of our community."
